Rob’s 13th Year Volunteering for Appalachia Service Project
Repairing a Roof, Rebuilding Hope
Rob’s crew spent the week working on a double-wide mobile home in David Township. The home had already undergone major prep work the week before, including the removal of three layers of old asphalt shingles, which had left the roof’s rafters compromised. Rob’s team:
- Reinforced the back rafters
- Installed new plywood sheathing
- Laid down the underlayment
- Prepped the structure for a new black metal roof
To ready the roof for metal installation, they added cold purlins—horizontal boards that provide structure for the metal panels. While the panels delivered that week were slightly too short to complete the project, the follow-up crew finished the job soon after.
Still, the transformation was tangible.
“It was a great experience,” Rob said. “I love doing it and I’ll be back again next year.”
Mentoring the Next Generation of Volunteers
One of Rob’s favorite parts of returning each year is seeing new students get involved and grow through service. This summer, he helped lead 22 youth and adults, guiding them through the hands-on work and the bigger picture: serving with humility, learning from homeowners, and living out compassion.
“It’s not just about the nails and shingles. It’s about people helping people—and that’s something I want these kids to carry with them.”
We’re incredibly proud of Rob and the time, heart, and skill he continues to invest in communities beyond our job sites.
